SAP, OpenAI and Microsoft announced a partnership to launch sovereign ‘OpenAI for Germany’1.

The reactions were predictable: “It’s hosted on Delos Cloud! Not really sovereign!” (Delos Cloud is Azure tailored for the German public sector).

We all love control but I would love to see people put energy where it is useful. I have always felt that arguing whether a product or offering is not truly sovereign is useless.

As an analyst put it: Digital sovereignty is an elastic concept.

When you are a sovereignty purist, you check for every sovereignty announcement and argue about their degree of sovereignty.

I get the motivation. You feel that the industry is using that ambiguity or elasticity in the wrong direction.

What should you do instead of arguing? I have two suggestions.

1. Continue to post on LinkedIn but instead of ranting, just explain in layman terms the level of control people give up with an offering and trust people to decide based on their risk appetite and budget.

2. Be opinionated, and for the exact product that you are criticizing, tell what people should use instead. It’s more valuable information.

Both approaches actually help people make better decisions.

Next time you see a sovereignty announcement, skip the purity test.

Ask instead: What control do users give up? What should they use for this exact use case?

But I disagree with the premise of complexity. Even if organizations cite it as the #1 challenge.

Here they are…

#1 "The landscape changes too fast to keep up."

The building blocks don't. Focus on those.

#2 "Analysis paralysis from too many options."

There are only 3 fundamental options.

#3 "Too much jargon and technical complexity."

Nowadays, this can be solved with a simple prompt.

#4 "Too many regulations to track."

I once saw a tracker with 200+ regulations. I boiled it down to 3 types. Much easier.

#5 "No playbook. I want frameworks."

I focus on principles. They apply regardless of frameworks.

#6 "Too many announcements."

My antidote: Focus only on what's really launching.

#7 "Vendor claims maze."

The ultimate tool to decipher anything? Ask, "Which specific problem does this solve?" Your favorite AI can help.

#8 "Too technical for execs."

An ex-colleague used to say: "After all, it's just about risk." And any risk can be brought to the boardroom. (DM me for the template)

#9 "Integration complexity with existing systems."

This isn't an integration problem. It's a sign of a bad design.
